YA Indie Carnival -- Writer Block Busters

YA writers and bloggers unite each week to share their thoughts, hopes and dreams about what it’s like to go indie in today’s publishing world. The future’s so bright, we built our own place to play.
This week, we're talking about writer's block. I may receive some harsh comments for this one, but I honestly don't think it's a real phenomena. Let me add a caveat to that. Not being able to write isn't real. How many people say they have writer's block but can easily update their Facebook status or email friends? It's not writing that's the issue. The fear that keeps us from creating is. So the term itself bugs me, I guess. It's honestly just our ego running rampant with us, telling us we're not good enough, judging us, beating us down and holding us back.

Thing is, the ego can be tricked out of such behavior as long as we're willing to admit it's not a block at all, just fear of changing and growing and tackling something it thinks we can't handle.

One of my favorite tools to use when my ego is humming and trying to distract me is the Ten Minute Rule. I've written about this topic on my blog before, but I think it bears repeating. Set a timer for ten minutes. That's it. Commit to ten minutes. Your ego will go quiet because surely you can't accomplish anything in such a short time frame. It's amazing how well it works. And at the end of the ten minutes, you'll find either you're just not into it, which means go do something else creative for a while before trying again OR you'll be so sucked into what you're doing you'll turn the timer off and keep going.

Stress is a huge detriment to us creative types. Stop letting it control your writing and your expression. Your ego has no place in writing, none. Whether you listen to music, do some jumping jacks or doodle to access your right brain, do what works and get back to it.

Okay, lecture over! LOL Hop over to our page and check out what's new this week.
